Types of Veins
There are three main types of veins in the body.
Superficial veins are just beneath the skin; they return the blood from the skin and other superficial structures.
Deep veins accompany the deeper arteries. These are larger in size and serve to collect blood from the deep muscles and organs of the body as well as from the superficial veins.
Perforating veins are communicating pathways between the superficial and deep veins.
Superficial veins have thin walls and have less support because they are not surrounded by the strength of muscle tissue. This makes them more likely to fail when pressure within the vein is increased.
