Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are one of the most common problems of the vascular system in the general population. It is estimated that about 15% of adults may be affected.
Varicose veins are cause by failed vein valves that allow damaged veins to become overwhelmed with excess volume, leading to the typical bulging appearance.
The cause may be related to a familial predisposition that allows veins to be more elastic and stretchy. Varicose veins can also be caused by trauma to the vein or by clots within the vein.
Prolonged standing or sitting may cause varicose veins to become bothersome. The most common complaints are an aching or heaviness in the legs.
In addition, many people are bothered by the unsightly appearance of varicose veins.
